PROMERIS FOR DOGS RECEIVES LABEL CLAIM FOR DEMODECTIC MANGE

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., (January 2009) – Fort Dodge Animal Health, a division of Wyeth (NYSE: WYE), today announced the Environmental Protection Agency has approved a new label claim for ProMeris® for dogs. The new claim extends protection offered by ProMeris for dogs to include “control of chewing lice and Demodectic mange mites.” ProMeris for dogs is a low-volume, topical spot-on, that also effectively controls existing flea and tick infestations and prevents re-infestations on dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older.

Demodectic mange is a skin disease caused by the mite, Demodex spp. The mites infest a dog’s skin and are typically transferred from the mother to her puppies during the first few days after birth. Mange is typically found in young dogs that have inadequate or poorly developed immune systems or in older dogs that are suffering from a suppressed immune system.

The disease causes lesions on the skin and usually involves hair loss, crusty, irritated skin and an oily appearance. Some dogs can develop secondary bacterial skin infections, which can cause fever, loss of appetite and lethargy. Demodectic mange in dogs can be a chronic, debilitating condition, for which treatment can be extremely difficult. In the past, dealing with demodectic mange was time-consuming for the pet owner and sometimes required a veterinarian to use a product off label. Despite available measures, some dogs fail to respond to treatment, and in some cases, require euthanasia due to the severity of the condition.

“With the addition of the demodectic mange claim to the ProMeris label, veterinarians have the option of using the recognized efficacy of amitraz in a convenient spot-on formulation to treat and control this condition,” says Rami Cobb, BVSc (Hons), MACVSc, Senior Vice President of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Fort Dodge Animal Health. “When we conducted field studies for the label claim, the before and after pictures of the dogs treated with ProMeris were remarkable. Visible improvements in the dogs’ conditions were seen following the first treatment and in most cases, Demodex mites could not be found after just a few months.”
